We always get the question of what is the best way to load the dumpster and maximize the room you have. Hopefully, these tips and tricks can help you out!
Dumpster loading techniques:
- Larger bulky Items: Smash Away! Even though our fully opening rear doors allow larger bulky items to be walked in. This also ends up taking up a lot more space. The best thing you can do is try to smash as many of the bulky items up as possible. This allows everything to be packed tighter and takes up less overall space.
- What if I can’t “smash”: Sometimes simply smashing things down isn’t an option. So the next best thing is to fill up every space you can! If you’re throwing away something like a dresser. You can always fill the drawers with other items! Or remove the drawers and toss things inside of the cabinet as well as the removed drawers.
- Mattresses: When possible keep mattresses either along the side vertically, or on/near the top. This helps keep water from staying inside the mattress. Most water will drain out naturally. Placing the mattress on the floor is the worst place, this turns the mattress into a sponge for moisture, and in winter a frozen-to-the-floor sponge.
- How high can I load the dumpster: The cutoff line is the top edge of the dumpster as marked by the stickers. We are required by the PA Department Of Transportation to have loads covered and secured. If items are loaded above the dumpster top then we cannot safely or legally haul the dumpster.
- Bag as much as possible: Bags are the best way to keep water out and items in. Bags also allow loose items to still conform to the dumpster as well as fit into smaller spaces. When things are tossed in loose a lot of the time items get hung up or bridge and then allow open pockets to form.
- Heavy items first: Since our doors allow easy loading through the back at near ground level heavy items should be loaded first if possible. This also helps with the loading and weight distribution of the truck.
- Drywall and wood: Try to load a few boards of wood or other items that won’t collect water first, then load drywall, and finish with wood. This helps keep drywall from collecting water off the bottom of the dumpster as well as not allowing it to stick to the bottom of the dumpster. If possible try to keep the drywall in the middle.
